Holistic Recovery Spa

A site dedicated to treating the Body, Mind, and Spirit Equally
  • .: Musculoskeletal Dysfunction :.

Constant tensional force in a muscle pulls on bones and structures. As a result the body segments get pulled out of correct posture. Poor posture and constant tension cause muscles to become"loaded". Meaning they play the role of bones, providing the structural and support for the area and the rest of the body. Eventually these muscles become fatigued from overuse and the other muscles become weak from disuse. The nervous system then functions in overdrive and a cycle of pain occurs, leading to musculoskeletal Dysfunction.

  • .: Injury Rehabilitation is it Holistic? :.

Injury rehabilitation approaches the healing goals holistically. However, the objective is to identify and work the specific muscles and structures involved in the dysfunction to eliminate pain. Deep techniques stimulates the site of injury and softens the tissue which begins healing. I concentrate on the main area of dysfunction but continue with whole body relaxation to deliver optimal benefits.

You may want to hold off on that alcoholic beverage before or after a massage!

Posted By on April 28, 2011

Many of our clients are not aware  alcohol consumption before or after a massage should be avoided. Especially if you received a deep tissue massage. While you may think that drinking a glass of wine will  intensify your relaxation, it may do the opposite.  In fact you may get the worst head ache or instant hang over without ever getting drunk. We strongly recommend that you avoid alcohol 4 hours prior and 4 hour post therapy and hydrating with H20.

A massage increases circulation so everything that enters into your body processes quickly. Be cognizant of everything you eat and drink after a massage.  Detoxification of everything your therapist broke up may take up to 72 hours post therapy. To reap the best benefits from your massage continue hydrating and avoiding alcoholic beverages.

Make the most of your Therapy Session with these tips

Posted By on February 15, 2011

As a client you can reap greater benefits by keeping open communication with the therapist. Things that should be communicated are depth, pressure, pain, or any discomfort. Always notify your therapist of any changes since your last visit such as new medication, pain,or  tension in new areas.  Always set a goal for your session and make sure you share this with your therapist. There many reasons to receive therapy, such as relaxation, pain management, energy balancing etc.

Something most clients are not aware of:

Deep tissue can become a health contraindication for clients who have serious medical conditions, is severely stressed, or not sleeping well. For example, deep tissue breaks up a high amount of toxins but also breaks down your body physically. That is why many clients feel sore for the next couple of days. A person who has not been sleeping well can experience a lower immunity response from the body. If deep tissue is performed it can hurt you rather than help because you are adding stress to a body that was already broken down by lack of sleep.

A relaxation massage such as Swedish with firm pressure would be best to help your body fully relax, thus encouraging your body to heal. Many clients are uneducated about therapy and are not reaping the highest benefits. Safety is the most important factor.

Breathing deeply with relaxing breaths will help your body relax. Anytime the therapist is centering in on tension spots you can breathe deeply to help the body release the tension.

Don’t eat a full meal prior to your session and prepare your body for therapy by hydrating. Relaxation increases peristalsis in the body which induces body waste. So it is encouraged that you keep to light meals so that you are not uncomfortably regurgitating while on the table.

If your therapist is too chatty make sure you indicate that you really need to relax. This is your time to release any stress you have. If you are connected with your therapist who prays over your body you may want to address anything you are feeling so she can humbly pray over your need.

Sometimes we get clients who are lonely, facing divorce, or maybe a loss. At that time it is common that they want to talk to express their feelings about something. We are not psychologists and are not to offer any advice but we remain empathetic and helpful to their healing. I welcome anyone who needs someone to open to but will also encourage moments of rest and recovery through prayer, or breathing exercises.

Always continue the healing process by hydrating 72 hours post therapy. Water helps send all of the toxins to the waste basket. Remember, this is your healing time. Make the most of it. Always be communicative to any discomforts and get as many massages as possible. They will help you live a happy and healthy lifestyle.

    Spirituality & Massage therapy…

Posted By on February 12, 2011

Many conversations have aroused questions regarding spirituality and massage. Does the combination of spirituality  offer greater benefits?

Are all forms of spirituality delivering the same results?

As a therapist offering Holistic therapy, I do incorporate Spiritual prayer in every session. In my experience, my clients have been able to release all their tension and pain through prayer & massage.

Preparation of the session begins well before the client gets on my table. My goal is to humbly connect with the body and initiate a higher form of healing. This  involves prayer and supplication to none other than the Most High God.

I continue praying over the client as I feel dysfunctions throughout the session. I  end in a prayer that asks God for a  physical-mental-spiritual blessing that covers my work. I also ask for continued  healing for my client post therapy. I have discovered, that whether the client believes in God  or not, always appreciates the prayer and happily wants to hear what I am asking on their behalf.

Sometimes prayer can be intimidating to someone who has not been to church for a long time. It is why I count it an honor to share this with my clients. Men and women, from all walks of life have loved receiving the spiritual blessing. When the soul feels restored, the body, and mind follow suit.

    That is real Holistic Therapy!

Many Resolutions are made during the new year and although many are broken, don’t let good health be one of them.  Make the conscious choice to eat healthier, sleep more, and get many massages! Massages are proven to reduce significant stress that can lead to disease and fatigue. Many times we are not aware of the damages because we force ourselves to keep going.

What you may not realize is that Stress is identified in the body the same as any serious disease. Significant stress automatically lowers immunity defense leading to colds, flu’s, and anxiety attacks to name a few. Other more serious illnesses like Cancer and heart attacks are also linked to high stress.

This year make it a habit to get regular bodywork to reverse the damages of stress. It feels great and you are doing your body, soul, mind so much goooood! Know a stressed out person? treat them to therapy! it will be a gift they will truly benefit from

God bless you!!  and Happy New Year!      M

Damages of Alcohol worth taking into account.

Posted By on December 19, 2010

Like to drink alcohol? What is not realized is the extensive damages you are causing to your internal organs. Please read this and choose to live a healthy life. Take care of your body so your body can take care of your soul.

    ALCOHOL AND THE DIGESTIVE

    SYSTEM / GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT

You bring the bottle up to your lips and tilt your head back allowing the poison to enter your body.  Your mouth is the opening to the gastrointestinal (GI) tract.  Guzzling down alcohol interferes with all parts of the gastrointestinal tract.  With the first sip, you are injuring the tissues in your mouth and esophagus.  The liquid inflicts further injury as it flows into your stomach and then into the small intestines. Alcohol requires no digestion—once in the body, it enters the bloodstream immediately through the stomach or small intestine lining. If you just ate something, the process slows down, but you will still become intoxicated and damage will still occur.

Chronic alcohol use leads to detrimental consequences in the GI tract.  The sooner you stop using alcohol, the greater your chances are of avoiding the extremely painful and possibly deadly effects alcohol has on the GI tract.

What is the GI tract and what are its functions?

    • The GI tract, generally considered a continuous tube extending from the mouth to the anus, is subdivided into different segments: oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anal canal.  Accessory glands, those that aid in digestion include liver, pancreas and salivary glands.

The GI tract’s job is to physically and chemically break down the food that you eat.  The GI tract allows absorption of nutrients into bloodstream and excretes any waste products it generates.

    • The GI tract is the site of alcohol absorption into the blood stream.  Further importance of the GI tract includes the breakdown and production of alcohol.

Direct contact of alcohol with the mucus membrane that lines upper GI tract can cause numerous metabolic and functional changes.  Metabolic changes have to do with the chemical processes that take place in living organisms, resulting in growth, generation of energy, elimination of wastes, and other body functions as they relate to the distribution of nutrients in the blood after digestion.

What happens in the oral cavity and the esophagus when they are habitually exposed to alcohol?

    Chronic alcohol abuse causes:

    • Damage to the salivary glands, which interferes with saliva secretion.
    • An enlargement of the parotid gland, one of the largest pairs of salivary glands that lie at the side of the face just below and in front of the external ear.
    • Inflammation of the tongue and mouth.  (Whether due to poor nutrition or alcohol’s direct effect on the mucus membranes is unknown).
    • Increased incidence of tooth decay, gum disease, and loss of teeth.
    • Impairment to movement of the esophagus.

Even a single drinking episode significantly weakens the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) (See figure 1).  Thus, Gastroesophageal reflux, backflow of contents of the stomach into the esophagus that is often the result of incompetence of the lower esophageal sphincter, may occur and the ability of the esophagus to clear refluxed gastric acid is reduced.  This effect of alcohol on the LES is one of the causes of heartburn.

Some of the diseases of the oral cavity and esophagus related to heavy alcohol consumption are:

Oral cancer:  Cells invade and destroy normal tissue cells on the lips and in the mouth and upper throat.

    • Barrett’s esophagus: The lining of esophagus is replaced by abnormal cells which leads to abnormal acid production.  This is a precancerous condition.
    • Gastoesophageal reflux disease (GERD) The sphincter weakens or relaxes, and the contents of the stomach splash back up into the esophagus.
    • Esophageal stricture: Cells lining the esophagus are damaged and cause narrowing of the opening.  A person with this condition will have trouble swallowing foods.
    • Gastrointestinal bleeding: Any blood loss that occurs through the digestive tract.
    • Gastritis: The inflammation of the lining of the stomach.
    • Esophageal Cancer: A tumor that grows in the lining of the esophagus
    • Nutcracker esophagus”: This disease mimics symptoms of coronary heart disease.
    • Mallory-Weiss syndrome: The massive bleeding caused by tears in the mucosa at the junction of the esophagus and the stomach.
    • Esophageal Varices: A bleeding condition resulting from dilated veins in the walls of the lower part of the esophagus and, sometimes, the upper part of the stomach.

How is your stomach affected by alcohol?

Even moderate drinking can still cause changes in gastric acid secretion, cause acute gastric mucosal injury, and also interfere with gastric and intestinal motility.

What exactly is Gastric Acid Secretion, and how does alcohol affect it?

    • Gastric secretions of hydrochloric acid and of the enzyme pepsin in the stomach begin protein digestion.
    • Alcohol consumption affects gastric acid secretion.  In low to moderate doses it stimulates gastric acid secretion—in higher doses it causes inhibition.
    • Chronic alcohol consumption causes shrinkage of gastric mucosa and decreased gastric secretory capacity.  Thus the stomach has less ability to kill bacteria that enter the body with food, which may lead to the colonization of the upper small intestine with potentially harmful organisms.

    What is gastric mucosal injury?

Chronic alcohol use causes bleeding gastric lesions that can destroy parts of the mucosa.

Even a single episode of heavy drinking can induce mucosal inflammation and hemorrhagic lesions.

What does Alcohol do to the stomach muscle?

Alcohol causes damage to the muscle layers of the stomach wall which mix incoming food bolus with gastric fluids.

Use of alcohol can cause decreased GI smooth muscle contraction.

After chronic use of alcohol, there is an increase in propulsive contractions, which causes diarrhea.

What are the effects of alcohol on gastric and intestinal motility?

Alcohol causes damage to the muscles that surround the stomach, and this damage changes how long it takes food to go through these organs.  Depending on alcohol concentration and accompanying meals, inhibition of gastric motility can occur and thus delay the emptying of stomach. This will lead to bacterial degradation of food and the production of gasses, which may lead to fullness and abdominal discomfort.

How does alcohol affect the small intestine?

The small intestine is the organ where most nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream.

Alcohol causes interference with absorption of nutrients.

It can also interfere with enzymes needed for digestion, with the transportation of nutrients from intestine to bloodstream, and with enzymes needed to metabolize drugs and other foreign organic substances in the gut.

Alcohol causes mucosal damage even in healthy people during a single drinking episode and can cause erosions and bleeding.

Alcohol also causes an increase in intestinal permeability which lets large molecules that normally would not be able to cross the intestinal wall to get through.

There is also the possibility of overgrowth of normal bacterial flora.

Alcohol decreases the muscle movements that keep food for further digestion, which may cause increased sensitivity to foods with high sugar content as well as causing shortened transit time and diarrhea often found in alcoholics.

How does alcohol affect the large intestine?

    • In healthy humans, alcohol consumption significantly reduces the frequency and strength of the muscle contractions in the segment of the rectum, which could reduce transit time of intestinal contents and contribute to diarrhea frequently observed in alcoholics.

Good News about the SPA industry

NEWS: TOP 10 SPA TRENDS FOR 2011 Massage therapy has always been one of the most popular services  offered at spas, both in the U.S. and worldwide. SpaFinder, Inc., a global spa-and-wellness resource, today announced its annual spa trend forecast. The report identifies global spa trends that SpaFinder’s staff and experts believe will influence spa experiences for both consumers and the industry in the coming year and for decades to come.  The report is based on analyses from a team of experts who visit hundreds of day- and stay-spas each year; interviews with top industry analysts; ongoing research across the spa, travel and beauty sectors; and data derived from SpaFinder’s relationships with more than 9,000 spas and salons across the globe.

    1. Aging … Raging: Spas are showing ever-more awareness of the needs of older spa-goers, and beginning to incorporate exercise physiologists, chiropractors, orthopedics and naturopaths who focus on rejuvenation of joints, pain relief and mobility.

    2. All eyes on Asia: Yoga, Thai massage, Ayurvedic medicine and acupuncture are staples on many spa menus, and the “Zen” nature of Asian design can be seen in spas worldwide.

    3. Salt Rooms and Salt Caves: Healing traditions that involve basking in salt caves or water may be centuries old, but they are truly coming of age in some of the most modern spas.

    4. Spa Brandwagon: Traditionally the province of standalone spas, the industry is moving rapidly in the direction of branded experiences.

    5. Deals Gone Wild: Online group-buying deals have burst onto the global scene, and the old-fashioned “deal” has morphed into a hip online industry. With spa and wellness deals a mainstay of generic sites like GroupOn or LivingSocial, it’s a sure sign that spa-going has achieved mainstream traction.

    6. The Science of Spa: Get ready for a new era where more questions about the effectiveness of spa therapies will be asked, as the emphasis on evidence-based medicine and the “science behind spa” heats up.

    7. Hyper-Local Spas: The desire for authenticity and immersion in the traditions and elements of a spa’s local environs and culture is here to stay. A maple scrub in Canada, organic food from the spa garden, or facilities built of local stone, while not new, were, until relatively recently, novelties.

    8. Extreme Beauty, Spa Edition: We are far beyond Botox. Stem-cell facials and plasma therapy (yes, that’s where blood is drawn and re-injected) are new buzzwords.

    9. Spa in a New York Minute: “In a New York minute” is jargon for how things move faster in hectic New York City. It’s also the name of a suite of mini (15- to 30-minute) spa treatments designed to be performed simultaneously by multiple therapists.

    10. Surprising Special Events Increasingly, spas are developing distinctive specialty programs to draw patrons seeking a unique group experience. While destination spas have been offering yoga and healthy cooking weeks for years, retreats now span everything from a high-flying “Trapeze Experience” to a creative jewelry-making class to the more sober and grounded gathering for survivors of loss.

Cancer and Psychological Stress. Can Stress lead to cancer? read this

Posted By on December 5, 2010

How does stress affect the body?

The body responds to stress by releasing stress hormones, such as epinephrine (also called adrenaline) and cortisol (also called hydrocortisone). The body produces these stress hormones to help a person react to a situation with more speed and strength. Stress hormones increase blood pressure, heart rate, and blood sugar levels. Small amounts of stress are believed to be beneficial, but chronic (persisting or progressing over a long period of time) high levels of stress are thought to be harmful (1).

Stress that is chronic can increase the risk of obesity, heart disease, depression, and various other illnesses. Stress also can lead to unhealthy behaviors, such as overeating, smoking, or abusing drugs or alcohol, that may affect cancer risk.

Stress significantly accelerates breast cancer metastasis in mice, study shows for first time

UCLA researchers uncover how chronic stress reprograms immune cells to facilitate cancer progression

By Kim Irwin September 17, 2010 Category: Health Sciences, Research
    Erica Sloan

Erica Sloan, first author of the study
Chronic stress acts as a sort of fertilizer that feeds breast cancer progression, significantly accelerating the spread of the disease in animal models, researchers at UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center have found.
Researchers discovered that stress is biologically reprogramming the immune cells that are trying to fight the cancer, transforming them from soldiers protecting the body against disease into aiders and abettors. The study found a 30-fold increase in cancer spread throughout the bodies of stressed mice, compared with those that were not stressed.
It has long been thought that stress fuels cancer growth in humans.
This study provides a model that not only demonstrates that stress can speed up cancer progression but also details the pathway used to change the biology of immune cells that inadvertently promote the spread of cancer to distant organs, where it is much harder to treat.
The study is published in the Sept. 15 issue of the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Research.
“What we showed for the first time is that chronic stress causes cancer cells to escape from the primary tumor and colonize distant organs,” said the study’s first author, Erica Sloan, a Jonsson Cancer Center scientist and a researcher with the UCLA Cousins Center for Psychoneuroimmunology. “We not only showed that this happens, but we showed how stress talks to the tumor and helps it to spread.”
In addition to documenting the effects of stress on cancer metastasis, the researchers were also able to halt those effects by treating stressed animals with drugs that block the nervous system’s reprogramming of the metastasis-promoting immune cells, called macrophages.
Beta blockers, used in this study to shut down the stress pathways in the mice, are currently being examined in several large breast cancer databases for their role in the potential prevention of recurrence and cancer spread, said Dr. Patricia Ganz, director of cancer prevention and control research at the Jonsson Cancer Center. If preliminary findings indicate benefit, early-phase clinical trials are being considered at the Jonsson Cancer Center testing beta blockers as a means of preventing breast cancer recurrence.
Other healthy lifestyle behaviors, such as exercise and stress-reduction techniques, may also influence the biological pathways described in the study.
“We’re going to be focusing on younger women, because they may have a multitude of things weighing on them when they’re diagnosed with breast cancer. Younger women have more significant life demands and typically are under more stress,” Ganz said.
Ganz said her proposed research will focus on “host factors,” or things affecting the patient that may be aiding cancer progression and which could help explain why a group of patients with the same type and stage of disease have varying rates of recurrence and cancer spread.
“This study provides evidence for a biological relationship between stress and cancer progression and identifies targets for intervention in the host environment,” Ganz said. “Because of this study, we may be able to say to a patient in the future that if you follow this exercise regimen, meditative practice or take this pill every day, it will help prevent recurrence of your cancer. We can now test these potential interventions in the animal model and move those that are effective into the clinic.”
In Sloan’s study, mice with breast cancer were divided into two groups. One group of mice was confined in a small area for a short period of time every day for two weeks while the other group was not. The breast cancer cells were genetically engineered to include the luciferase gene, which is the molecule that makes a firefly glow.
The growth and spread of the cancer in the mice was monitored using sensitive cameras that can pick up the luciferase signal. This allowed Sloan and her team to observe both the development of primary tumors and the spread of cancer throughout the body, said senior study author Steven Cole, an associate professor of hematology–oncology and a Jonsson Cancer Center researcher.
What was interesting, Cole said, was that the primary tumors did not seem to be affected by stress and grew similarly in both groups of mice. However, the stressed animals showed significantly more metastases throughout the body than did the control group. The cancer, in effect, acted differently in the stressed mice.
“This study is not saying that stress causes cancer, but it does show that stress can help support cancer once it has developed,” Cole said. “Stress helps the cancer climb over the fence and get out into the big, wide world of the rest of the body.”
Cole said Sloan detailed the biology of the stress-induced changes in the cancer cells along every step of the pathway, providing a roadmap by which stress promotes cancer metastasis. Additionally, Sloan proved that using beta blockers in stressed mice prevented the same cancer progression seen in the stressed mice that did not receive medication.
When cancer occurs, the immune system sends out macrophages to try to repair the tissue damage caused by the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. The macrophages, in an attempt to help, turn on inflammation genes that are part of the normal immune response to injury. However, the cancer cells feed on the growth factors involved in a normal immune response. Blood vessels that are grown to aid healing instead feed the cancer the oxygen and nutrients it needs to grow and spread, and the extracellular matrix, which provides structural support for normal cells, is attacked during the immune response, helping the cancer cells escape from the primary tumor and spread to distant parts of the body.
“Many of the genes that promote cancer metastasis get turned on during the immune response by macrophages,” Cole said. “This study shows that stress signaling from the sympathetic nervous system enhances the recruitment of macrophages into the primary tumor and increases their expression of immune-response genes that inadvertently facilitate the escape of cancer cells into other parts of the body.”
Sloan showed that the beta blockers prevented the macrophages from hearing the signals sent by the sympathetic nervous system and stopped them from infiltrating the tumor and encouraging cancer spread.
The study was funded by the National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Defense and the Jonsson Cancer Center.
UCLA’s Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has more than 240 researchers and clinicians engaged in disease research, prevention, detection, control, treatment and education. One of the nation’s largest comprehensive cancer centers, the Jonsson Center is dedicated to promoting research and translating basic science into leading-edge clinical studies. In July 2010, the center was named among the top 10 cancer centers nationwide by U.S. News & World Report, a ranking it has held for 10 of the last 11 years.
